Greenburgh Eleven UFSD Life Skills Program: An "In Real Life" video game pursuit of life skills to thrive beyond high school.
The "Next Level Future Lab IRL" is the place where students will train for real life and launch their future. Students will:
Build identified life skills
Build personalized career skills
Build academic skills based on NYSED's use of the Dynamic Learning Maps
Concept:
The classroom emulates an "In Real Life" (IRL) video game . . .
Students move through 10 Worlds -- instructional units with a problem- or project-based challenge to xolve
The first world is -- Tutorial World: The Realm of Identity - to introduce the theme for the year, establish norms and structures, and gather baseline data; this world lasts 2-3 days.
When students engage in learning activities, they earn points. Points allow the class to unlock the next world.
The next 9 worlds last approximately 3-4 weeks each.
In world 2 - Fuel Forge - students will focus on using the kitchen to make food, reading and applying math on recipes, and cooking for the elementary students.
In world 3, The Wordsmith's Hollow - students will read a graphic novel and write an original graphic novel suited for elementary students; they will then share their books with elementary students.
Each world (after the first) has 4 Levels - essentially breaking down the work. In Wordsmith's Hollow, for example, the first level explores the history and transformation from comic books to graphic novels; the second is for reading a graphic novel; the third is for writing one; and the fourth is for sharing with an IRL audience. The class amasses points to move from level to level.
Throughout the year, as students practice various life skills they earn points, regardless of how much help they receive. When students demonstrate mastery without needing help, they earn badges. The collect badges throughout the year.
